Inspirited Minds was invited by the Sunnah Trust to deliver a 30 minute workshop on the 3rd of January 2021 that explored how to manage mental wellbeing.
During the pandemic they were hoping to support the young adults who are part of the organisation. Six young adults attended the workshop on Zoom and the workshop as a whole was received incredibly well, with everyone actively engaging and giving their thoughts and suggestions on the topic at hand.
We began with a general discussion on mental wellbeing – what it is and what this means for each individual in the audience. From this was the conversation moved to characteristics of positive wellbeing versus negative wellbeing, and how to identify which state one is in at any one time. We looked at emotions, thought processes as well as behavioural changes that could indicate the state of one’s wellbeing; such as sleep difficulties and feeling withdrawn from social contact.
The main content of the workshop focused on the ‘5 Steps of Wellbeing’ (Connect, Be active, Notice, Learn and Give). The young adults really related to all the 5 things and I emphasised the important of incorporating all 5 aspects into our day to day life to do what we can to improve our wellbeing, even if this means improving it by 10%.
The evening was invigorating and empowering, and we’re thankful to all the attendees and everyone involved who made it the success it was.
Feedback from Sunnah trust: “Thank you very much on behalf of the Sunnah Trust team for leading today’s session. The students really enjoyed the session and found it very engaging and learnt new ways on how to deal with mental health.”
Top tips for Managing Mental Wellbeing:
- Give mental wellbeing a priority by taking some time every week to reflect on whether your overall wellbeing was positive and negative, and possible reasons as to why this could be the case
- Remember to connect to people around you at least 2-3 times a week because it is a part of human nature to be social and feel connected
- Re-charge your wellbeing by being active as that releases healthy hormones and endorphins that can lift your mood and make you feel better and support in the community.
- Take every challenge and test as a learning opportunity that Allah (SWT) is offering, and see it as a chance to grow and improve
- Giving doesn’t have to be monetary, you can offer to others something as simple as a smile to something as valuable as your talents
