The Effects of Domestic Abuse on Mental Health in the Muslim Community

This is a 2-part webinar series on Domestic Abuse and Violence within Muslim Communities. This series takes place for 4 hours across 2 days.

About this event

“The Believers, men and women, are protectors one of another: they enjoin what is just, and forbid what is evil: they observe regular prayers, practise regular charity, and obey Allah and His Messenger. On them will Allah pour His mercy: for Allah is Exalted in power, Wise.” [Qur’an 9:71]

Domestic abuse has a significant impact on mental health and wellbeing. This impact may be amplified when being a victim faces community stigma, is stifled from sharing their experiences from fear of backlash and when the only solution provided by loved ones is to “be patient”, particularly within the Muslim community.

There are unfortunately many cases where men and women suffer alone and in silence, and are often not given the adequate support or any at all.

It is therefore our collective and social responsibility to ensure we can protect ourselves from domestic abuse, and identify those who may need this protection. By attending this webinar, you will be contributing towards the mission of improving the safety, mental health and wellbeing of the Ummah (community), In Shaa Allah!

You will also receive a certificate of attendance.

Dates and Times:

  • Part 1: Saturday, 19th February, 11am-1pm
  • Part 2: Sunday, 20th February 11am-1pm

By attending Part 1 and Part 2 of this webinar, you will learn about:

  1. The different types of abuse that may occur in martial relationships, and the impact this has on the mental health of victims.
  2. How to potentially identify perpetrators of abuse and violence, and how they may use coercive control.
  3. The Islamic rights of a husband and wife and the Islamic response to abuse.
  4. The stigma that victims may face and how to help them, more about the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme, and how to offer support to others including those with young children.
  5. Practical and spiritual advice on how to better mental health and wellbeing, and where to obtain additional support or information.
