This talk was organised by Bristol University Pakistani Society on the 27th of November 2020 for university students who have a South Asian background.
For 2 hours on the evening of the 27th of November, about 40 university students attended a workshop on mental health in a cultural South Asian community, including the organisers from the university society. Alhamdulillah, the event was a success with attendees engaging well and asking many questions around the South Asian culture and how to address negative attitudes towards mental health.
The audience were engaging as they had opportunities to provide feedback and their own opinions within the discussion. We spoke about our personal experiences with mental health, general information on mental health and wellbeing, and how to support oneself and others. We also discussed the various services provided by the qualified counselling and support teams at Inspirited Minds and how their services can really empower individuals to speak their truth and heal from difficult experiences.
Following on from this, we had a short QnA where the attendees had lots of questions and shared their stories. The event was a bright success, with the attendees sharing that support from other organisations and societies on campus when it comes to raising awareness of mental health and providing support. They really have created a good network of support that ensures people who are struggling can access the support they need.
Top tips for Managing Mental Wellbeing:
- Taking the time to listen to the friend/family member who may be feeling down or negatively.
- Not trying to please people or comparing yourself to other people as it will make you feel like a ‘failure’ if you have not achieved something that someone else has and this is not the case.
- If it is a serious issue, although it is important to listen and help a friend, remember you are not a professional so they may need to get professional help.
